Diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of adult blindness due to changes in blood vessel structure and distribution such as new vessel growth proliferative diabetic retinopathy which requires lengthy analysis from a specialist. Endeavoring is to reduce the effect of proliferative diabetic retinopathy includes obtaining and analyzing images of the optic at regular intervals. The focus of this paper is on the automated segmentation of retinal vasculature using the region growing method and the power law transformation. Segmentation involves dividing images into subsections that are of particular interest such as defining areas of an image that are appropriate to be subsequently analyzed or finding circles, lines or other shapes of interest.
