In school, especially in the 21st century, students all over the world have decided to ditch the pencil and paper for laptops. Now, whether it is for homework or note, the laptop has been the preferred option to take notes.
Although, personally, taking notes by hand seems more practical—lots of college students enjoy having a laptop simply because typing is easier than writing. Pam A. Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel M. Oppenheimer of the University of California ran tests that reveal that writing notes is better than typing them up. Mueller states, “The students who were taking longhand notes in our study were forced to be more selective because you cannot write as fast as you can type.” The fact someone has to be more selective helps them study their notes for later. Times survey, 92% of college students prefer to read print books instead of e-books. This makes more sense, since looking at a screen for hours can give people headaches. Also, reading a print book makes it easier to comprehend because of your ability to physically place your hands on the book. The Pearson Prentice Hall found that about 65% of the population consists of visual learners and it is harder to create true hands-on learning through a computer screen. In the article, “Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away,” the author makes several “moves” to support his or her theme. The author makes a point about how when students, who were using laptops, got reminded not to take long, extensive notes—they still did. That statement was very fascinating because it shows the effect that typing has on our ability to learn.
