In Parable of the Sower Octavia E. Butler develops Lauren as a protagonist who, as she grows, is a character with conflicting emotion. I believe this is done because Lauren is a teenager and so are a majority of the readers and as you develop you start to form your own beliefs on certain subjects. I can relate with Laurens religious dilemma, because I am currently questioning “what if” and it always buts me in a scary, uncomfortable position of which side I should take. As I think more and more about it i begin to be hesitant because if there is a higher entity than what will happen is I stop being faith to this higher entity. Lauren questioned God and compared him to greek god, I also began to do so because my Catholic God was developed later…

Loved ones or the ones who are close in this situation will be your coach, they are standing by your side in this time of training telling you the correct way of doing things and pushing you to do your best at all times. Attaining the age of realization that you have changed is completely different for everyone out there. After the race you will either be completely invigorated or thinking I could've done better, maybe It wasn't the time of realization.…

Historical Period films, like any other movie, should have a good source of entertainment so the audience is not easily bored. However, one of the most truly important parts of a historical period film is the accuracy of what is being portrayed. Certain liberties can be taken, but take too many and the stories get dismantled and unrecognizable. Especially when one has a story about one of the most important rulers of the British monarchy. The Young Victoria is the type of film to do this.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

Out of the five clues to theme, the most relevant ones to this text are the conflict and solution, what the main character learns, and the stories symbolism. The first statement mentions that “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is a transformation story about a flawed or ugly woman who has to be rescued or restored by the right man. However, the plot that the question has stated does not appeared in both the prologue and the tale. Even though there is an appearance of an ugly old woman in the last part of the tale, it is not that she has been rescued or restored by a man. Instead, it was more like the old woman is teaching the man that he cannot judge a person by their appearance or their class in the society. As a result, I personally agree with the second idea where it said that “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is an early tale of feminism showcasing the ways a female character gains power within a repressive,…

The Tale reveals that the perfectly good woman is powerful, or at least potentially so, insofar as her suffering and submission are fundamentally insubordinate and deeply threatening to men and to the concepts of power and gender identify upon which patriarchal culture is premised (Hansen, 190.) However, the happy ending brings the heroine the dubious reward of permanent union with a man whom the Clerk, embellishing his sources, has characterized as a sadistic tyrant, worst of men and cruelest of husbands (Hansen, 190.) As a final message and a warning for both men and women alike, the Clerk's tale ends with the following…

In the beginnings of this semester’s readings I find that Shakespeare enjoys writing about love and romance. Shakespeare does not shy away from powerful metaphors and comparisons. We find a constant theme of love represented in many types of ways. The first metaphor I initially picked up on was his varietal use of flowers, and him relating those flowers back to the romance of the story and each one of them has a distinct aspect that is metaphorically different in meaning. He uses different types of flowers to describe different things, people, and actions.…
