Retarded Word Analysis

Improved Essays
Have you ever heard a word that gets under your skin? Or makes you livid when someone says it? The word that does this to me is “retarded.” My son was born with Down syndrome on June 19, 2014. When someone uses this word it makes me think of what he will have to deal with for the rest of his life. When he is walking down the hall at school, or when friends are joking around saying it to each other and he has to hear it. This is really disheartening and terrifies me! I would like everyone to know that this is not a word that is ok to use. I don’t think most people even think twice about saying it or think it is offensive, but I would like people to know that it is not ok!
The word retarded was used to describe disabilities many years

The Word “Retard” The first amendment allows Americans to freely express themselves without the fear of imprisonment. This amendment is also understood as a gateway to freely using offensive language regardless of how it impacts an individual. Although there are certain words and phrases that should not be used, it is important that there is a distinction between something that is prohibited versus something generally frowned upon. Words should not be banned, that can lead to other words/phrases/etc also being banned, and that will diminish the significance of the first amendment.…

Ishmael Beah’s memoir A Long Way Gone is appropriate for the Sterling high school English IV curriculum because Beah makes use of the complexity of ideas and creates connections to the real world. Markedly, the use of the complexity of ideas makes the memoir well rounded, and better reading material than many other pieces. Fairman maintains, “Invariably, negative connotations materialize around what ever new word is used.” He debates how the “r” word was originally used to take place of the insulting word idiot, yet still the word retarded has been turned into a negative insulting word. Then the phrase “intellectual disability” became the new official diagnosis. In 2010 the family of Rosa Marcellino a little girl with Downs Syndrome helped to pass “Rosas Law… mandated that “intellectual disability” replace “mental retardation” in many areas of federal government” (Hallahan 86). According to the medical dictionary mentally retarded means, “persons diagnosed as having significantly lower than average Intelligence and considerable problems in adapting to everyday life or lacking independence in regard to activities of daily living” (Mentally Retarded). So if people in the medical field such as doctors were to say a person is mentally retarded they would mean that person has a lower intelligence than a normal person or might have learning problems. Also according to Wikipedia retard is pejorative word that has the meaning of a person with mental disabilities (Retard n.d.b.). If the word retard is used in a medical practice I would not mind it since the definition is logical and I agree with the medical definition. Urban dictionary is another source that gives the definition as a person born with a mental condition (Retard n.d.c.).…

Having an altered perception of the world, Ken Kesey created the captivating novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In his novel Kesey has constructed a world within a psychiatric ward, which becomes a microcosm of society. In this world the assumed deaf and dumb Chief Bromden, and other timid patients are heavily controlled by Nurse Ratched, an authority apart of the powerful and dehumanising combine. Through figurative language, foreshadowing and motifs readers are warned about the influence of societal expectations can have, particularly on a person’s power, sexuality and individuality, and thus Kesey ultimately leads us to question what it means to be human and an accepted member of society. Through the unreliable and delusional narration of Chief, who believes his experience on the ward was ‘the truth even if it didn’t happen’, Kesey allows us to see how societal expectations may affect a person’s…
