According to the National Shoplifting Prevention Association (NASP), retail stores across America roughly lose over 30 Billion dollars due to shoplifting. Working for a retail store for almost 3 years now, I have come to witness many different shoplifting experiences. An experience that comes to mind was when two tall men walked out the store having both arms filled with purses. And all we could do is watch them walk out the store with all those merchandise. As a retail associate we are not allowed to physically touch customers and we cannot follow them outside the store due to safety reasons, however, lost prevention (LP) can do those things. In some cases, shoplifter go beyond the usual walk out. They attempt felonious acts, which causes people to get hurt (Moylan Par 9). For pro shoplifter, this is how they make a living. They steal items to sell or even keep for themselves. This allows them to make a living, putting themselves and the people surrounding them in danger, this happened before in Bellevue Washington with a family. They were exiting Old Navy and they ran into a robber who was being chased by the police. The shoplifter had a weapon and out of self defense for him and his family a 14 year old kid tackled the shoplifter. The 14 year old kid stated, “I decided that I have to protect my family. So I straight-on football tackled him”(Roney Par 1). So not only are the employees are endangered but also the shoppers who are at the scene. Retail stores use sensors such as tags or spider wrap on their merchandise to prevent the shoplifters from walking out with the merchandise. Although some get away with theft the ones who do get caught, 50% of the time are being transferred down to the police (Shoplifting Statistics Par 9).
