Resurrection In A Tale Of Two Cities

Resurrection: noun : The act of causing something that had ended or been forgotten or lost to exists again, or to be used again. In Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities a story is told from the uneasy time of the French revolution. At the conclusion of the book a heroic sacrifice of one character for another exemplifies a major theme of the novel. Charles dickens uses a theme of resurrection, which is supported by many of the events throughout the novel. Dickens displays this theme even throughout the whole novel beginning with the first events of the book. In the initial events of the chapter a message is being passes along in France that sends Lucy and Mr. Lorry to go retrieve Dr. Manette from France. This event shows a transformation of Darnay dying to Darnay living, and supports the theme of resurrection. During this event a large transformation occurs where Darnay changes metaphorically from death to once again living. Before the sacrifice Darnay is seen as doomed for death with no way of achieving freedom from the prison or the guillotine. After the sacrifice Darnay is freed from all of the troubles of France when he returns to England. This can been seen as a resurrection Darnay’s life in the novel. “He had fully comprehended that no personal influence could possibly save him, that eh was virtually sentenced by the millions, and that units could avail him nothing” (352). Charles Darnay has fully accepted his fate that he was going to die. He convinced himself that there was no hope for and that his death was imminent. This just fully shows the sharp turn of events that happened to resurrect him back to his normal life.
