Restorative Practice

Decent Essays
Introduction When implementing Restorative Practice in schools one of the informal practices used is “Affective Statements”. Therefore, “Affective Statements” are a personal way of expressing one’s feelings when responding to the negative or positive behaviours displayed by others. Using these statements are an effective way of letting someone know how their behaviour is “affecting” or impacting self or others. Further, it helps us to specify the particular behaviour and encourage or discourage that behaviour (Costello, 2013).
Five (5) Affective Statements based on Restorative Practice in School.
1. I feel frustrated when you disrupt the class by texting on your phone during the lecture.
2. I am disappointed that you cheated on the exam

Zion’s piece, “Indian Restorative Healing”, discusses and brings to light the important role indigenous people have and can continue to have in restorative justice practices. He also mentions the role western individualism plays in our current society’s structure of justice. Solving conflict is complex, emotional, psychological; that is just a fact of human nature. William, I like the way you laid out your classroom rules, along with the handbook rules from patriot high school. Your choices reflect big challenges to keeping the classroom on track. Students who tend to be lethargic, and apathetic need to know from day one, that sleeping through class won’t fly; additionally, remaining respectful is of utmost importance. I noticed that the Patriot Student Handbook uses a lot of language to cover the use of cellphones. This was the Case in the Newport News handbook, as well.…

It is important to recognise positive behaviour in children and young people. This should be done through constant praise and encouragement. Actively promoting positive behaviour within the school setting is important in creating a safe and secure environment for each child. The benefits of promoting this behaviour are that children feel safe and happy regardless of race, sex, religion, ability or background. To enable this to happen, I believe that all members of the school community, children, all staff, parents and governors, should have high expectations for their own and others’ behaviour.…

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is an example of early work of feminist literature for its illustration of attitudes toward physical and mental women’s health. The narrator of this piece is the wife of John, who is a physician. We follow her story as she is brought to an old estate by her husband due to her mental condition, which her husband labels as “temporary nervous depression-a slight hysterical tendency” (Gwynn, pg. 78). She is placed in a nursery where she is forbidden from working, writing anything down, is told to eat well, exercise, and to get plenty of air. This “therapy” ultimately fails and the woman details in her journals which she hides from her husband, her descent in to insanity or in another type of interpretation,…
