How To Write A Reflective Essay On Leadership Development

As I progressed through the Restorative Leadership Development: Authority with Grace course over the last several weeks, a few themes emerged for me. The need to take care of myself, the need to create time and space for reflection and the need to be confident to make decisions that will have consequences are areas that I received specific feedback about. Throughout the course, I applied these ideas to both my work and my personal life with mixed results. However, despite the mixed results, I have learned significant lessons, and begun to establish a stronger sense of confidence, that I will carry forward with me as I try new approaches and work diligently to continue to improve my personal, interpersonal and leadership skills.
I realized that taking care of myself absolutely must come first. Through the reflections, I recognized that I have spent so much time focusing on the needs of others that I have not allowed myself time to experience my own feelings and identify my own needs. To address this, I have begun to distribute leadership both within our unit meeting as well as on a daily basis. I have begun to ask for help and rely on others for support. By doing so, I opened avenues of communication that may

This space comes in the form of both self-care and reflection. I need to ensure that I am taking time for myself, whether that is riding after work, taking a five-minute walk during the day, or reading a quote or passage from a book, I need to take my mind away from work for a few minutes to refocus and recharge. For me, riding has not only been a much-needed self-care exercise, it has also proven to be an enormous help in learning how to establish deep trust, enhancing my leadership and interpersonal skills (even though it is with a horse!) and building my

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

The first few years of ministry was a lot of "it seemed like a good idea at the time" experiences strung together. Failure isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. After a series of challenges that could discourage the most optimistic of leaders, I once turned to Holly and said, “If I wasn’t the pastor of this church, I would go here.” “Everything rises and falls on leadership,” I was reminded in a quote by John Maxwell. “Oh, Great,” I…

As I went through the “Listening Continuum”, I realized that I give reflective responses most of the time. For example, during interviews or conversations with people in a higher position than me, I gravitate towards the use of “silence” and “restatement” simultaneously, and “clarification”. With friends, on the other hand, I would use reflective, middle range, and directive responses. Initially, I thought that since I understand the responses listed, I am a good listener, however, I came to realize that knowing when to use these responses was also very important. Sometimes I would accidentally offer advice that was not necessary or was silent for too long which can…

One of the key factors in development is experience. Through exposure to differing situations and circumstances, one is able to assess his or her own decisions and draw conclusions as how they have developed. The west point leadership development system does well to give cadets a lot of exposure to new and challenging experiences from which they can grow. However, because of the factors that west point cannot control, each individual cadet’s experiences, while similar in many different ways, are unique to his or her circumstances. I have experienced many things at west point, but there is much I have not learned.…

Module three gave way to information that will become extremely useful to me, I have found most important element to pursue in my development is transformational leadership. The model covers transformational leadership in chapter seven, Full Range Leadership Development (FLRD). After completing the Electronic Self-Assessment of Leadership Behaviors (e-slab), my results have identified that I should work more specifically towards applying the four I’s: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration. My personal leadership philosophy is that I prefer to be in charge of a situation, except if there is someone more qualified than me to lead. Then, I will allow that person to lead. The reason for this is by being in charge, I am able to have a deeper understanding of the project and the people involved and I can ensure that all aspects of what is being accomplished is completed thoroughly and correctly; in other words, I prefer to lead because I can hold everyone to a higher standard, which will result in a better outcome. However, in the case that someone is more qualified than me to lead an aspect of the project, or the project as a whole, due to greater experience or knowledge, then that person can lead instead for the sake of completing the project with a higher quality. In this way, my leadership style can best be described as authoritarian, although I would prefer to be a more democratic style leader in the future.…

Lately I have been trying hard to really go above and beyond by volunteering for things both within the squadron and outside of the squadron. One of main things I am doing this semester outside of squadron is continuing to be the cadet program manager for my capstone. I had the option to step down from it at the end of last semester and do a less stressful and visible job within the capstone. Though, I decided not to step down because I saw this position as a very good way to practice my leadership qualities that I am trying to strengthen.…

I would probably change my encouraging methods and be more assertive about getting professional assistance, such as talking to the experts about what was going through their minds. Another change would be to put more energy towards my assignments and ask for help from my tutors rather than holding it all inside. Model used for my second piece of reflection is Schon’s model of reflection (Smith, 2005). This has helped me to view life differently, as we all think nothing is going to happen to us even at the worst of times.…
