“[Austria] drowsed in peace in the deep privacy of a hilly and woodsy solitude where news from the world hardly ever came to disturb its dreams, and was infinitely content” was said by Theodor Fischer (148). This quote portrays Austria as a small country that basically shuts itself off from the rest of the world. There seems to be little that could change the country from its isolation and involve it in world problems. Realistically, we, the United States, is unable to cut itself off from the rest of the world. As a world leader we are forced to be aware of conflicts, war, and injustice that are happening in the world today. “He made us forget everything; we could only listen to him, and love him, and be his slaves, to do with us as he would” was said by Theodor Fischer (158). The three boys were drawn to Satan who by his words and actions convinced them that he was there friend and protector. Satan played mind games with them without the boys understanding the consequences. Adolf Hitler, much like Satan in the story, persuaded a whole nation to carry out his dictates which resulted in The Third Reich. Those who protested were tracked down and murdered. “In any community, big or little, there is always a fair proportion of people who are not malicious or unkind by nature, and who never do unkind things except when …show more content…
Only the mad can be happy, and not many of those” was said by Satan (234). Satan believes that a person in his right mind can not be happy because he sees poverty, death, and misfortune in everyday life. Therefore a person who is unaware of the world around him has to be happy. Today, dementia often takes away the ability for an individual to be part of the real world. Some victims become angry and unhappy while others with dementia appear happy and content. Those of us who are sane can look for the good things in life and work to make those around us

This quote implies that humans have become tolerant to accepting evil as something that is socially unacceptable. It also suggests that human beings not only have no control over the actions that they do, but also they do not want to accept responsibilities for their actions. Instead, they use excuses to curtail their actions. Lastly, this quote also indicates that humans are blind to what is happening around them via evil. By reducing the offense of evil, it suggests that not only do human prefer not to accept reality, rather human beings decide what is reality from their own…

“The best index of a person’s character is how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and how he treats people who can’t fight back.” I consider this quote by Abigail VanBuren to be very true. What it means is that we can determine someone’s character based on how they treat others. People who will only do good for someone who would return the favor have bad character. Someone like this would take advantage of others to get to where they want to go in life, only having shallow relationships with others and not bothering to hold a genuine friendship.…

“It is to the credit of human nature, that...it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love…” This quotation is found in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the works I read this year in my AP English Language class, which tells the story of Hester Prynne who commits adultery and has to face the complications that resulted from it and regain respect from not only others but herself. This quote comes hand in hand with what I experienced through my junior year of high school. The quote states that it is quicker to love than hate, and even then hatred will gradually turn into love.…

The United States has been considered the world’s police for more than one hundred years. The founding father’s originally sought to keep American interest secular and to be solely concerned with it’s own well being. President Roosevelt’s Monroe Doctrine “asked the Europeans not to increase their influence or recolonize any part of the Western Hemisphere” (Milestones: 1801–1829, 1823).…

“We as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” I agree that we should be accepting to people different than ourselves. At time it can be very hard to do this and sometimes we don't even realize what we are doing to the person's feelings. For the other person this can be very hard on them. We need to take the time before we say something to think about whether or not it is going to crush this person.…
