I currently play on and captain MC United SC, a Men's competitive soccer team, which is coached by letter of reference writer Peter McMahon and verifier Patrick Gerrard (#28), activity #23. As team captain, I have gained confidence in leading others and I have learned to become disciplined and responsible. During several matches, I've had to motivate my players when the situations were not favorable. On other occasions, keeping them calm was a challenge. Furthermore, I have experienced the idea that building a sense of trust with my teammates allows for a reciprocal relationship in which mutual respect is built. As well, I have been able to develop exceptional communication skills by providing pre-game, half-time, and post-game speeches along

The North Star is recognized as the perennial navigation beacon and compass to follow, providing direction and guidance for those lost without it. Great leaders, similarly, provide focus and influence to guide others to achieve goals they would not reach on their own. A great leader, not only will inspire others to attain goals they would have not attempted otherwise, but also, will motivate others to grow by learning more about the world of opportunities around them and eventually motivate others to raise to a higher level of performance . As a water polo volunteer coach I learned to create an environment where players would experience successful practices and would be motivated to try harder to improve their game skills.…

My participation as an attorney on the mock trial team not only fueled my interest in the legal system but also formed me into a leader. During my junior year, our team’s coach announced me as a team captain on our JV team, and I embraced this challenge of helping to form a strong team by assisting attorneys who did not have experience, and staying late to work with my coach on team strategy. In addition, I promoted a positive atmosphere by encouraging my teammates and baking cookies for the team. By the conclusion of the season, our team had bonded together as a family and we greatly improved our abilities. Although our team ultimately did not win the regional competition, I valued the experiences of bonding with my teammates, becoming a…

My running career has surprisingly taught me a great understanding of the meaning of Sportsmanship and Teamwork. Because as captain, my coach had advised me that I would need to be a leader and set an example for my teammates, that they would watch my words and interactions with other competitors, how they would follow me around and ask questions about track meets. I was warned that how I lead them this year would affect their running careers after I was gone. But I knew this already, due to the fact that I had once been in their shoes with my previous captain.…

Words have a stronger influence then most people would think. Whether it be words of encouragement, or words that tear a person down, the way a person communicates with others can change the whole thought process of the one receiving the message given. For example, to be a part of a successful athletic team, there needs to be some sort of communication, whether it be coaches or players. One example of how words and communication can be influential is an experience of mine that I will never forget.…

Have you ever heard the stereotype that athletes are just “dumb jocks”, “meat-heads,” or “spoiled”? Well, in most cases, that’s a false depiction. At the University of Wisconsin-Stout, student athletes on the Track and Field team are required to work hard to maintain good grades, relationships, networks, and the privilege and eligibility to be an NCAA Division III athlete. Ultimately, the key to achieving these things is communication. Effective communication is remarkably valued in my community because it helps us determine the difference between success and failure.…

Case study report on the psychological issues within a football academy From the case study information, it is clear that the main psychology issue the football academy are struggling with is social identity. For example, the athletes are performing as individual’s trying to out win one another, from the behavioural observations it states that ‘the football players have been behaving as a bunch of individuals with little sense of belonging to an academy team’ and ‘it appears there is no emotional attachment between football players within the academy team as a whole’. The individual who had once wanted to become a competitive cheerleader and dedicate all her time to learning to tumble no longer felt passionate. As my aspirations diminished, I began to struggle to identify what it was that motivated me. My anger that stemmed from being on a team that neglected to practice became my downfall as I began to acquire demerits, but it was those very moments in which I began to see my leadership skills flourish. Recalling my last moments of cheer camp for the last time, I remembered as they herded us aside like a group of cattle, calling upon all those that would be seniors and all those that were captains and co-captains. Our cheer camp instructors began to explain the importance of accepting leadership roles even when they weren’t granted to us.…
