Claiming an education is easier said than done and as you grow older you begin to realize how responsible you are over your own education. In Adrienne Rich’s essay, “Claiming an Education,” she makes an argument about responsibility for all students. In her opinion it is important, within the educational community, to truly take control over our own education. That is to say, you as a student has to be engage with what is being taught to you. As a matter of fact I failed every research paper that was ever assigned to me. At the peak of it all, the last semester my junior year I had to put together a research paper about the writing of Macbeth. This did not seem so hard to put together at first. Until, I actually had to start writing and getting information. This turned out to be one of my worse essays which kept me at a C for the semester. I could not figure out exactly what I was doing wrong in terms of writing an A paper. Many of my previous english teachers were willing to assist me in writing this paper. Also, I reread all the material I needed to know before starting this project. However, I still had a hard time organizing my thoughts on the piece of paper in the format that would be pleasing to my teacher. Unfortunately, I did not realize where I went wrong till after I handed in my paper. Instead of listening to the teacher during class and participating in class discussions, I decided to sleep and figure everything out on my own at home. For example, being involved in class discussions, staying focused, and challenging yourself to learn something new. Not just take the easy way out just because you are familiar with it. You have to challenge yourself to take those hard classes and be successful in them. Everyone is responsible for their education, thus your education successfulness is what you make it. In other words you learn what you want to learn and as a reflection of your efforts you will be placed in society where you fit in. An education is not in your possession if you are just receiving it. “The difference is that between acting and being acted-upon.” says rich.
