Responsibility In Hinton's The Outsiders

In the story, it may seem like Darry dislikes Ponyboy, though I know otherwise: “Suddenly I realized, horrified, that Darry was crying. He didn’t make a sound, but tears were running down his cheeks. I hadn’t seen him cry in years, not even when Mom and Dad were killed” (Hinton,98). Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy are three brothers who lost their parents in a car crash. Darry, the oldest (20), was forced to drop out of college and take care of his two younger brothers by working at a Construction site. Sodapop (17), dropped out of school merely because he wasn’t studious and prefer to work at a gas station. Ponyboy (14) was the youngest and is considered the smartest of all three. He was top of his class and was on the Track team. Together, these three has to survive the harshness the world could bring towards Greasers, and fight against the force that could ruin their family and send the two youngest at an orphanage causing their family to break apart. Though,the Curtis brothers should stay together because they’ve proven themselves to be responsible, loving, and a close family.

One of the many proofs to prove this is: “Sodapop … a drop out so he could get a job and keep me in school, and Darry, getting old before his time trying to run a family and hold on to two jobs and never having any fun” (Hinton, 43). This proves that they all sacrificed so much to be together. Darry, especially, did not care one bit even if he had to give up his education and freedom just to keep the youngest in school. Meanwhile, Sodapop kept the family together with his easy-going and understanding attitude. My second proof, same as the one in the first aspect also works to show their closeness to each
