Veteran: a person who has served in the military. That’s the definition that Google gives you when you type it in, but to me a veteran is more than that. I come from a military family. Words like loyalty and respect are commonly used in my home especially when it comes to describing my father and my grandfather, both veterans who have given up their time to serve this nation. Due to my father serving overseas, I know how it feels to wake up in the morning, walk down the hall, and expect to see a warm smile welcoming you to the kitchen, but instead find that it is not there.…

Nobody from my family that I know of fought in the war, but that does not mean that I shouldn’t remember the others that fought and died. A lot of people who fought in the war were brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers, and sons and daughters and they were willing to put their own lives at risk not just for their family, but for everyone's. Their neighbor, your great-great-great-grandmother, the little boy that lived down the street, they fought for everyone. They were more than just soldiers. Veterans are a group of people that write a blank check totaling their life to the government. They fight to defend our country and every American citizen. Then when their service is done they come home to be unnerved and underappreciated. Veterans are: mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and friends. The main thing we should do is make them known to others, so they know that we are there for them and let them know their service is more than appreciated, and we should let them know that and not let them be forgotten.…

I hope that advice from Mencius, an ancient Chinese scholar, will help you decide which position you should take when settling civil rights disputes. Everyone has their own role in society, and as the future president, your job is to do what is best for our country and people. Since America is based on a democratic system, the president must incorporate the people’s opinions when creating or making changes to policies.
