Have you ever thought what if you couldn’t pick your job or what you wear? Well this is what the book of Anthem was all about written by Ayn Rand. The humans that resided in this city could not choose anything. They were told where they had to work based upon how they did in school. These humans were not allowed to do anything besides the job that they were assigned. This is a distinctive way of life from our way of life. There are some comparable things about their society and our society. In the book anthem the kids did go to school, however they were never pushed to strive or do better than their fellow classmates. Whereas in our society we go to school just like the kids in Anthem but we are pressured to get better and we have things to look forward to if we do succeed. The kids in anthem had nothing to look after and try to excel because once they were done with school, they went to the council of the city and there the council decided where they got to work. So, the people of anthem don’t get to pick there what they do after they have completed their school, the council determines where they would be best fitted and the person has no say whatsoever. For example, “equality 7-2521 was chosen to become a street sweeper, even though they wanted to be a scientist.” This is the …show more content…
The only people you could have conversation with was the people that had your same job or the council. You couldn’t talk to anyone outside of that. Also, it was forbidden to look at women let alone talk to them. Also, this is a huge difference in our society. You can talk to anyone that you would like to and talk to women. You can also switch jobs whenever you would like to. One other thing is that you had a name but several other people had your same name and you had stick with that group of people basically. Whereas we have our name and normally few people have that

One of the most important parts of Anthem was the immorality of the collectivist society in which Equality grew up. In his society, one was not permitted to choose a career, choose a lover, or choose where one lived. Everything was decided for the society and no one had a choice on most aspects of their lives. In the first chapter of the novel, Equality explained how he was told by the teachers, “Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of Students. You shall do what the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you.…
