Joud's Reading Without Walls Challenge Response
Option 2: Read a book about a topic that you don't know much about.

For the reading without walls challenge I decided to read the book “Out Of My Mind” by Sharon M. Draper because first of all it is about a girl with disabilities and I don't know much about disabilities other than the really common ones "so why not read it and give it a try?" I said and I sure was right the book was SPECTACULAR in my defense and I think the person right now who's reading this should go read it. I don’t usually read realistic fiction books so basically its a book out of my comfort zone which hopefully is the point of this challenge.

I thought it would be a nice idea to select this book because first of all I love inspiring or emotional books, movies etc. and my sister which is the reading queen has been begging me to read it and so have many of my friends, and I thought it wouldn't hurt to read a book about disabilities, I mean you never know you may learn a thing or two. I love learning about new things and especially if they are really inspiring and can show you the differences between your life and theirs.

Each author offers different perspectives of how people have treated them due to their disability. John Hockenberry shares his adventures, describes different accounts he has had with people across the world, and how they have treated him due to his disability. I was shocked to read how different people treated Hockenberry in New York versus Iran. At one point, Hockenberry is in a restaurant in Iran telling a waiter that he was worried that he was going to be attacked by the crowd. The waiter responded by telling him that anything like that would not have happened because “Iran is a religious country.…

In addition to everything the film also slightly discusses the financial strain that comes with taking care of someone with a disability. All in all, this film successfully discusses and shows some of the struggles of a life with a disability, and is therefore persuasive in explaining the problems with interaction between people with disabilities, and the rest of the world. The film was very effective illustrating the problem of how people with disabilities are being segregated and forgotten about. The film gives examples and shows how this is happening too.…

    Labeling Analysis

Labels have been around for centuries to place people in certain categories that were either permanent or temporary. Back in the medieval time period everyone had a status that they couldn't change like knight, peasants, or queen. As time progressed these labels disappeared and changed to more appropriate uses such as medical, psychology, and etc. When used within these environments I find it appropriate to use labeling because if we ignore the issue it will continue to get worse or never improve. The time when labeling is inappropriate is if it is being forced upon an individual through society, medically, or through the media.…

I think the book, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Double down”, written by Jeff Kinney, was an awesome book. The book is about a young kid, like me, who is just learning his common sense and his moral ethics. The book was very entertaining to read as it gives the perspective of a young boy, Greg Heffley, of his not-so-ordinary life. People may think he’s ordinary, but when you get into his everyday life, it gets weird. He has an older brother, which I can relate to, and he’s always trying to get out of work, no matter what.…
