Response to Intervention or RTI is a pre-emptive approach to measuring students’ skills and utilizing this information to decide which types of targeted teaching to employ. The Response to Intervention (RTI) model identifies every student's academic requirements and aids teachers in providing personalized support to meet the needs of each student. According to the authors of Strategies for Reading Assessment and Instruction, the aim of Response to Intervention is to increase instructional intervention when students begin to struggle instead of depending on the “wait-to-fail” model of instruction (Cooter & Reutzel 44). Response to Intervention involves: universal benchmark assessments and screenings, high quality instruction, evidence-based tiered intervention reinforcement, and frequent progress monitoring. The three-tiered model, RTI has become commonly used in schools to better differentiate teaching strategies to assist all students. …show more content…
Once students’ academic levels have been determined teachers can then decide which tier of research based effective teaching method should be used to assist all students in educational growth. If the screening indicates that students performed on the expected grade-level than the teacher can continue with tier one well-designed research-based instruction and progress monitoring. Response to Intervention Tier 1 consists of differentiated instruction, targeted explicit lessons, teacher guided practice, independent practice, instructional-level text, and frequent progress monitoring.
