Oxygen is a part of everyday life. Soccer players and football players constantly argue about which team works the hardest. In this case, this experiment will help to evaluate which team has better breathing habits while running. Blood oxygen concentration involves your blood receiving oxygen during exercise. Every breath you take affects your blood oxygen concentration.…

Abstract Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited disorder and leads to the presentation of various types of cancer in a family. This experiment was conducted to determine first, based on Valerie’s family pedigree, if Li-Fraumeni syndrome is present in her family and who has been affected by it. Once this was established, gel electrophoresis was used to compare samples of Valerie’s blood and normal breast tissue to her tumor tissue and to a wild type DNA fragment to see whether or not her cancer has metastasized; it did not appear that this was the case. Lastly, her children’s p53 gene was sequenced and compared to the wild type p53 sequence to determine whether any of them carried the mutation. Two of her children do have the mutation at two points…
Offender seen today in chronic care followup of hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency, and hypothyroidism. Patient is currently in CIP. I reviewed her chart and noted that her renal function was normal in 12/2016. At the time, her blood pressure was good at 106/71. At her visit in 12/2016, it was felt that she was overly controlled and was having episodes of possible orthostatic hypotension with lightheadedness.…
P 53 also known as “the guardian of the genome” is a tumor suppressor gene that works regulating the cell cycle and apoptosis. It is a very important gene since the lack of its action can allow the cells to divide an abnormal number of times and if action is not taken by the cell’s checkpoints, this could lead to cancer. The evolution of tumors associated with mutations in the p53 gremlin is not well understood and numerous researches have been completed trying to identify all of its characteristics. As all inherited gene mutations, p53 mutations are present in all somatic cells, but the effect of these mutations can have malignant effect on the cells.…
1. On presentation, this patient’s overdose has resulted in the following symptoms: bradycardia, bradypnea, hypotension, hypothermia, hypoxia, and non-responsive to pain. For this patient, an endotracheal tube would be placed to protect the airway and start mechanical ventilation, since the patient is having difficulty maintaining spontaneous ventilation. This will also protect the airway from potential aspiration. Continuous oxygen therapy at 100% to help improve the patient’s hypoxia.…
Oxygen can be delivered by low or high flow systems depending upon the client’s need. Low flow methods allow for room air to be inhaled along with the supplemental oxygen; examples of low flow methods include nasal cannulas, face masks, oxygen tents, and transtracheal catheters. The nasal cannula can deliver 2 to 6 L/minute and is the cheapest most commonly utilized device tolerated well by clients. In addition, the device is easily applied and does not block the mouth allowing the client the ability to talk and eat. Reservoir nasal cannulas is utilized in home setting; this device stores oxygen in the reservoir when the clients exhale, then deliver 100% oxygen bolus when the client inhale allowing the delivery of a higher oxygen concentration…
TN commonly becomes refractory to medication and may require surgical intervention. There are many studies reporting successful outcomes of various procedures for TN, however, the subjective nature of pain and lack of HRQoL data make comparisons difficult. The results of this study suggest MVD is significantly more likely to produce a BNI I outcome and result in greater QOL than SRS at 7 years follow up. MVD had significantly less complications and a lower recurrence rate at 7 years. MVD success rates were inversely correlated with age.…
Hypovolemic shock is the result of severe blood/fluid loss causing the heart to inadequately circulate oxygen to the rest of the body (Workman, 2013, pp. 812). In this condition, there is sudden decrease in blood volume within the vascular space causing a drop in mean arterial pressure. This decrease in mean arterial pressure causes a sudden loss in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood related to the sudden decline in available red blood cells. As the heart is unable to properly pump oxygen to the rest of the body, vital organs begin to shut down, eventually leading to death. It is because of this reason that it must be treated as a medical emergency.…
Additionally, in the article of Burfoot (2011) she states that a very serious and sometimes deadly side effect of drinking too much is hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a side effect caused by immoderate hydration causing very low sodium levels in the body, which can occur after too much drinking Gatorade. Besides, excessive Gatorade intake paired with medical conditions could lead to hypertension or high blood sugar. It also states that it can occur if an athlete drinks too much Gatorade as well. Many athletes feel that they are getting better by drinking Gatorade, however in reality; too much Gatorade could be dangerous.…
State of the Problem In its variety of forms, cancer is estimated to affect more than 14 million people per year, and is the cause the death of more than 8 million (National Cancer Institute). Despite millions of dollars of research in the field, and a concentrated effort by researchers around the globe, a panacea for cancer doesn’t exist, although much headway has been made in earlier detection and better treatment methods. Much of the difficulty in treating the disease lies in its diversity; cancer is as varied as it is deadly.…
The highest priority for Jackson is impaired gas exchange related to ineffective breathing patern. It is imperative to ensure that Jackson has a patent airway and adequate oxygenation during the seizure because hypoxia can have severe consequences on the patient’s condition. Jackson must be placed in a side lying position to facilitate airway positioning and reduce the risk of aspiration. He must also be suctioned appropriately when there are secretions. If safety precautions are not taken during the seizure activity, Jackson can face serious complications.…
Endothermy has a lot of benefits and costs compared to ectotherms. Endotherms depend on their bodies metabolism to produce enough heat to raise their body temperature. Endotherms balance heat production with heat loss. Each endotherm has a range of environmental temperatures that keeps its body stable and it does this by regulating the heat loss and heat production. They regulate their body heat by vaping their metabolic rate and change its rate of heat loss by adjusting their insulation.…
Decompression Sickness Decompression sickness, also known as "the bends," occurs when a person moves from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure too quickly. Decompression sickness is considered a medical emergency. CAUSES This condition is caused by gas bubbles that form in your blood and tissues when air or water pressure changes from high to low too quickly. The gas enters your blood when you are in an area of high pressure.…
I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…
