1 John is a response to Gnosticism, which had a dual view on spirit and the physical world (Utley, 2013). They felt that anything on a higher plane, such as God, was inherently good, and anything on the physical plane was bad. They argue that even Jesus was here only in spirit. 1 John spoke out against these alleged false teachers by using words that describe Jesus in a physical nature, such as “in the flesh,” and “the word of life…made visible.” The author even uses the word “we” to state that all Johannine believers had seen and felt the presence of Jesus in their lives (Harris, 2014). 9
