Assessment Task 3B: Written Reflection
Revisiting the Situation
As part of an assessment piece, I conducted an interview with person who I did not know prior in order to simulate a scenario I may encounter with a client in the future as a health professional. In the ten minutes I was given, I directed a sustained interview supported by effective listening, questioning and responding skills to initiate an understanding of the interviewee’s profile and to establish a professional rapport with the interviewee. Prior to the interview I realised I was experiencing anxiety and apprehensive as I feared my nerves would hinder my ability to deliver a beneficial interaction with the interviewee. Although, once the interview commenced, I immediately adapted

The interview substantially modified my perspective on the gravity of nervousness and how it can significantly alter my potential to direct a professional and fulfilling interview. Skills that I identified in the interview were my abilities to implement the techniques of smiling and eye contact as catalysts for an effective delivery. Smiling is a crucial factor in successful patient and health professional interactions since it evolves a positive and trustful environment and attributes to patients improvement of: emotional health, symptoms, quality of life, and ability to retain important medical information you provide to them (Hillen et al., 2016). Additionally, eye contact is a crucial quality in successful patient and health professional consultations since it encourages patients to engage in the consultation and focus on the health professional’s information (Hillen et al., 2016). However, vulnerabilities that I identified in the interview were the few times I applied informal language and how I repeatedly fidgeted. For example, at times I would respond with informal words such as “wow” and “cool” and I would tap my feet when the interviewee was answering my questions. If these vulnerabilities were translated in the future, they could negatively …show more content…
Having analysed my fortes and discussed the importance of good communication, I have developed an understanding of the standard I wish to achieve. In future, I would like to be able to present myself professionally and utilise effective communication in consultations in order to develop a remarkable rapport with clients. In order to eliminate my vulnerability of fidgeting, Bays et al. suggest a potential strategy in consultations would be to sit with my legs folded and cross my feet (2014). Additionally, in order to eliminate my vulnerability of using informal language, Bays et al. suggest a potential strategy to use in consultations would be to practice what to say beforehand and to use precise language that is uncluttered with slang and jargon words that have the potential to detract the clarity from the client (2014). These strategies are realistic and achievable since, with practise, they will be easy to apply and they can be implemented discreetly to eliminate any further distraction of the client. I will know I have achieved my aim when I am able to interact with clients with a professional manner and demonstrate empathy to provide them with premium service. The next time I conduct an interview with someone, I am now confident I will eliminate the

(350 words) The first issue that arose was that I had to deal with a distressed female client. She constantly checked her phone and asked for breaks during the interview. I implemented John Barkai’s principle that ‘the primary purpose of active listening is to build rapport with the client’ by listening intently to her description of the background of her case without interrupting her which in turn increased her confidence in my role as a legal assistant. When the solicitor entered the room and asked for further information about her case she repeatedly looked at me for reassurance.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

Since my first clinical day I have had the opportunity to reflect on my practice as a FNP and what differentiates my medical practice from a psychiatric practice. I set out to explore the differences in practice and I have observed the vagueness that exists between the physical and the mental wellbeing of clients. With that said the more I conduct interviews with clients the more comfortable I am becoming. I am beginning to find my comfort zone and what works for me when conducting the interview. I feel I am becoming less robotic and more engage with clients.…

As clients come to me, whether it be mandatory, by necessity, or by choice, I will choose my methods based on the needs of each of my clients. As the client and I collaboratively assist and plan for their success I believe they will only learn the skills necessary by doing. For example, a client can express their desire to get a job, but they will not acquire one until they have applied. It will be my responsibility to help develop the skills needed to feel confident in the application…

Second skill used during my interview with my client was reflecting listening. According to Rosengren (2009), “reflective listening involves making statements, not questions” (p.34) this skill is critical for MI it allows the social worker to understand the speaker’s idea and confirm if the concept has been understood correctly. Reflecting listening is composed of two types of reflections, “simple and complex” that can be used to encourage the client to talk more about in depth, and help the social worker to exposed the client concerns. After carefully analyzing the interview and calculating my score using the MITI 4.21 coding sheet the use of simple reflections and complex reflections was used 33 % during the interview process. These results also indicated a ratio for reflections to question was 1.2.1, as results the three were…

Getting practice using the techniques we have been learning in real time, with a real person, made the content more concrete. I was conscious of employing solution focused techniques as much as possible in the short time we had to conduct the interview. While my performance produced mixed results, the practice was a good start to becoming an expert using the technique. Strengths and Effectiveness When reflecting on my performance, I was able to express to the client I was fully engaged in our conversation by intentionally implementing a variety of reflection strategies.…
