Response To Brooks Response

This week, I had the privilege to read and respond to Tori’s response to Brooks’ essay. She mainly discussed how she believes that the students in the writing consultations should be doing most of, if not all of the work. Tori discussed the importance of the environment created in the Writing Center, as well as the power of student-centered work. While her essay was very strong in the points she brought out of his essay and analyzed thoroughly, I believe that she could have gone more into depth in examples as to what she discussed. Tori made very strong points in her response and there were many points that I agreed with as well. One of the main points that she made was making sure that the student felt as though they were doing the work and submitting it as their own. This not only creates a better writer, but ultimately a more confident writer. Tori gave an example as to when she was being tutored and they gave her all the answers. She felt as though she had not earned the grade they had given her but rather felt cheated …show more content…
However, like most analogies, it was too general for the given situation. While yes, I believe that the consultants should not do the work for the student, it does not mean we should not help them along the way. Depending on the learning style and the overall motivation of the student, gives the consultant a better idea of how much they need to help push the student along. In my time at the Writing Center, I have experienced appointments where I have to do all the questioning and it is like pulling teeth, as well as only asking one question and having the student figuring everything out for themselves. It really does vary on how much the student wants and needs the help. Not only does the consultation vary on what the student’s needs are, but the overall effectiveness of the consultation can vary depending on the environment created by the

    Silva on the way she teaches writing is that she is very encouraging towards her students, she makes sure to find creative ways to make everyone interested in the topic. She also has a way of communicating with the students that allows her to understand each need that each student has, she had a few students that would tend to go off topic or get distracted easily by other things, so she made sure to be aware of each of these things so she could possibly find new ways to engage these students in the same topic as the others.
