Response To Anthony's Letter To The Army

Anthony,

Thanks for the response, It was a shocker to me because I thought I did everything right but apparently I was wrong. When I was in school back in 1996 which was the last time I went school, I was taking my history, sciences phys Ed and math, the only writing you did was on paper or your notes. I had no writing classes back then and y job in the army the only time I write a report is when I do counselings on soldiers. I am learning to use Turnitin and I have some friends and family that are going to help me also.

Often in this paper I will be referring to a discourse community, and at first it would seem like you are not a part of one. Nevertheless, sports teams, book clubs, even just having a job puts you in a discourse community. John Swales, a professor of linguistics, defines discourse communities as having certain criteria. He states that they have an agreed set of public goals, they have mechanisms of intercommunication, and they have a specific lexis. I am currently in my second year here at Western Illinois, and I am majoring in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration.…

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
