Alayna,

You make a great point about not wanting to make a scene in front of other patients because it could potentially scare them aware. I hadn't thought about that, but I do think if I saw an encounter happening involving a doctor shopping incident in a medical office that I go to it would probably make me concerned as to what might be happening there that I'm not aware of and make me consider going elsewhere, I think it's important when speaking with the prescribing physician about a patient who shows possible characteristics of "doctor shopping" to do so discreetly. I think it would be difficult sometimes to differentiate between a patient who is addicted or a drug abuser and a patient who is legitimate. I feel it would be best to try

The store housed approximately 100 SKUs that encompassed various sizes or products. Within the drugstore there was an entire shelf along the aisle, with an approximate size of 6 feet by 20 feet that displayed the various products. It was obvious that some products had ran out of stock, maybe two or three. There were a couple pharmacists and what looked like about four pharmacist assistants. There were not any visible shelf toppers, but I did see coupons, promotional labels, and endcap displays.…

Likewise, addicts were able to “doctor shop” by traveling from clinic to clinic and purchase as much supplies as legally possible in each location. OxyContin was distributed in Florida pain clinics, informally known as pill mills, that often only accepted cash, didn’t accept insurance, were equipped with security guards, and were in many cases owned by ex-convicts. One report mentioned that the lines were so long that employees could make $1,000 a week in “tips” by moving people to front of the…

You did well talking about the contract. If the patient and the practitioner sign a contract as a form of harm reduction approach, it will mandate the patient to avoid extra requests for extra prescriptions, the patient will submit to drug testing and also it will prevent the patient from selling their medications due to the consequences that they will face if they violate their opioid contract, such as, ending opioid prescription…

Sam Quinones’ Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic portrays the addiction epidemic that was cultivated into a catastrophe by pharmaceutical companies and doctors who billed opiates as risk-free drugs. The Pharmaceutical industry is a $300 billion dollar business which receives a lot of scrutiny in regards to their purpose, side effects, and lucrative schemes (Prescription Drug). The effects of the prescription drugs can be deadly if not used properly. Prescription drugs are responsible for more deaths annually than illegal drugs (Mercola). Ironically, the thing that is supposed to help individuals with their health concerns is actually killing them instead. This is the result of patients receiving prescriptions with the doctor’s expertise. On the other hand, if individuals were permitted to receive medication upon request, regardless of their symptoms or lack thereof, then the consequences would be dire.…

A very popular example of this is Michal Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter. In many of these cases involve over prescribing drugs, especially narcotics. In these cases resembling the situation mentioned, I do believe that a doctor is to be charged criminally. I think that many doctors are too quick to push pills and antibiotics to their patients. It is at the doctor’s discretion to provide the best possible healthcare for their patient which also includes preventing possible development of drug addictions.…

Do you recommend journaling to your patients? If not, why not? I have not talked with my patients about journaling, I have, on the other hand, stressed the importance have putting a folder together that would include medication’s they take, and updating the list the first day of the month, also to include any surgeries, procedures along with a list of any thing they may have been diagnosed with. I work in the ER, and I can’t tell you how many people I see who have no idea the names of the medications they are on and why they are taking them. Some times a family member will come with the patient to the ER, the patient is unable to speak, and when I ask them some simple questions like, “ what surgeries have they had in the past?”, they have…

I do not feel that even an established patient should be able to call their physician and ask them to call in a prescription refill. When a physician writes out the patient's prescriptions and refills, they will write enough of a supply to get the patient through to the next office visit. The supply includes the first prescription with a refill or two following making a renew cycle of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months. Once a physician that calls in a prescription without the patient coming in for an office visit they are accepting responsibility for the action and any resulting consequences. These consequences may include, any new symptoms developed that might require diagnostic investigation, medications interfering with new drugs that the patient…
