Response Essay 'The Sociology Of Leopard Man'

Booker T. Washington, an African-American educator once stated, “in America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” In other words, the world gives infinite choices to make but yet, we decide to make the choices society prefers us to make. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” Tom Leppard made the wise decision to make the choices he desired to perform instead of conforming. According to dictionary definition, social conformity can be defined as an agreement between an individual's behavior and a group's standards or expectations. One should not change their looks, beliefs, or behavior to fit in with society because it destroys one’s uniqueness and humans are naturally meant to be themselves. One reason it is crucial to believe that conforming is not a good idea is because it can demolish one’s unique individuality. Long ago, I had moved to a new school and none of the popular kids accepted me because I have always been myself, which I suppose is different than most individuals. But I was happy being the person I was meant to be. I always thought, this is the person the universe wanted me to be, and I have never changed for anyone since then, and today have many wonderful friends who appreciate me. This is prime to realize because had I conformed to what the popular kids wanted me to be, I would have never been the unique individual with the wonderful friends I have today. I have a burning passion for skating, and the skating culture is very distinct on the way they dress and behave, but I had always stuck to what made me feel comfortable, and I personally feel a connection to the world being who I naturally am.
