Respiratory Therapy Personal Statement

One of my main focuses in contributing to the field of respiratory is making sure that I continue to do research in the field of respiratory in order to constantly grow the field and make sure that respiratory therapist continue to expand their knowledge. Specifically, I want to continue to focus on my undergraduate research and investigate central nervous system sites and neuropharmacological mechanisms mediating hypoxic ventilatory and sympathetic responses. Also, I want to continue to examine the brainstem sites and neural mechanism(s) responsible for shifts in respiratory patterns. Lastly, I also want to continue to examine reflex and central neural control of the airways. Research is one of the major ways I plan on continuing to help the respiratory therapy profession for years to come.
Furthermore, advocating for respiratory therapist is major for me. Making sure that there is bills passed that give therapist rights to get paid for educating patients on how to use certain treatments and techniques is important. For example, the HR 2619 bill was something that I followed and advocated for. It is crucial that respiratory therapist is more marketable and is being paid for pulmonary management education. Growing up in low income housing in the Bronx, New York pollution , asthma, and cigarettes was just the norm. However, after watching my mother suffer from another disease and consistently working with pulmonologist and respiratory therapist to help her get better and bring her back to normal strength ; it was from there that I got interested in the field and knew that I to had to help families just like the respiratory therapist helped my mom. Passion and love was the major factors that turned me into a leader and advocate for the respiratory therapy
