Respiratory Syncytial Virus – RSV

Anatomical & Physiological Influences
Causes

RSV more frequently effects infants but can affect adults. Infants who have had RSV have an increase frequency of wheezing.
Air enters the respiratory tract through the nose or mouth and then either enters the nasopharynx, or oropharynx respectively. Continuing through the laryngopharynx to trachea, which divides at the carina to form the left and right main bronchus. In each lung the bronchus divide into the lobar bronchus, segmented bronchus, the smaller bronchi, the bronchioles, the terminal bronchioles, the respiratory bronchioles, the alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs and finally the alveoli. Respiratory Syncytial Virus frequently referred to as bronchiolitis is an acute viral infection of the bronchioles in the lungs that affects the respiratory tract, specifically the bronchioles. The virus

Because there are two strands, it is thought this may be why we haven’t’ developed immunity to the virus. The virus affects the epithelium in the lungs by decreasing the function of the cilia and sometimes even destroying epithelium. The bronchioles become obstructed due to increased mucus secretions and edema within the submucosal …show more content…

What is the difference between the upper and lower respiratory tracts? The upper airways or upper respiratory tract is the parts of the respiratory system lying above the glottis (Vocal cords) • Nose – External breathing organ. • Nasal passages, Inside the nose, the sticky mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity traps dust particles, and tiny hairs called cilia help move them to the nose to be sneezed or blown out • Paranasal Sinuses, - These air-filled spaces alongside the nose help make the skull lighter. • Pharynx, - Both food and air pass through the pharynx before reaching their appropriate destinations.…

    A) The infection process of a vertebrate virus consists of 6 stages. Provide the name for each stage and provide details of the events that take place at each stage using Influenza virus A as the model. The 6 stages consist of: Attachment, Penetration, Uncoating, Biosynthesis, Assembly, and Release. Attachment is when the virus attaches or “locks” itself onto an acceptable cell. This occurs because a protein receptor is recognized by the virus and the virus attaches to the cell.…

The respiratory system comprises many organs, such as the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchial tube, and the lungs, that all have responsibilities to ensure that the body receives the right amount of airflow. However, when the respiratory system is exposed to pathogens, or it is not protected, it can create problems such as, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), orthopnea, and many other minor or major diseases that can cause a patient 's respiratory system to become infected. Emphysema is a lung disease (pulmonopathy) that affects the alveoli through breaking down the elastic fibers in the lung, mainly because of proteases, which are the chemicals from immune cells. In comparison to many forms of…

It is so common that most children that have it were infected by the age of two. That does not mean adults can’t catch it so beware. In adults and healthy children, RSV symptoms are mild and mimic the common cold.…

Bronchiectasis Description Bronchiectasis is a lung condition in which there is stretching and enlargement of bronchial tubes (airways) of the lungs. It is permanent abnormal dilatation of one or more bronchi/ bronchiole due to destruction of ciliated epithelium, elastic and muscular tissue. The destructive process may be initiated by primary microbial infection (necrotizing pneumonia, tuberculosis, aspergillosis, etc.) or obstruction (foreign body, tumour, lymph node, etc.)…

Specific Aim1: Investigation of in situ NK cell and neutrophil responses during MmuPV1 infection and tumor development Rationale: Innate immune cells including NK cells, monocytes, neutrophils, macrophages, and DCs play a crucial role during the early phase of the viral infection (36, 40, 62). We hypothesize that differential disease outcomes are associated with local immune cell populations and their activity. Neutrophils are the first and most abundant cell population that reaches sites of viral infection and exhibit both protective and pathologic functions (36, 63). In vitro study showed that HPV16 E6 and E7 cooperatively disrupted IL-8 transcription, a chemotactic factor for attracting neutrophils to the infected sites (35).…

“Since 1700, there have been approximately a dozen influenza A virus pandemics; in the past 120 years there were pandemics in 1889, 1918, 1957 and 1968” (6). The pandemic in 1918 was the worst in in recorded history which caused approximately 546,000 deaths (6). These are all reasons why the flu is worth studying and finding a vaccine for. There are multiple types of the flu virus, specifically influenza A, B, C, and D. These names are given based on the antigen they have, or antigenic type (2). “Human influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics of disease almost every winter in the United States” (2).…

Feline Immunodeficiency VirusThe Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) was first isolated from cats in 1986 and wasdiscovered due to an outbreak of FIV infected cats housed together in several pens (Pederson112). FIV belongs to the family Retroviridae, the subfamily Orthoretrovirinae, and the genusLentivirus (Taniwaki et al. 551-552). Being that FIV is a lentivirus, this means that it’s a “slowvirus” with long incubation periods that could last for years (CFHC). FIV is present worldwideand “in the United States, approximately 1.5 to 3 percent of healthy cats are infected with FIV”(CFHC). The virus is very similar to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).Transmission of infectious diseases usually occur through the shedding of the pathogen inthe…

In this assignment I will be explaining the physiology of two body systems, the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system in the relation to energy metabolism in the body. Energy metabolism is where energy is generated from nutrients and delivered to the organs around the body. Energy is needed in the body in order muscular movement, circulation of the blood, lymph and tissue fluid, breathing process, cell growth and repair, the transition of nerve impulses and for the building of different complex molecules. The cardiovascular system There are four major functions of the cardiovascular system, these include: the transportation of nutrients, gases and waste products around the body, the protection of the body from infections and blood…
