1. The actual volume of oxygen consumed per minute, V̇O2, is calculated using an equation that is a reasonable estimate, but one must keep in mind that said equation is based on the fact that both the volume of inspired and expired air are equal and that there is no change within the gases that are stored inside the body. The same can be said for the equation that is used to calculate the volume of carbon dioxide that is produced per minute, V̇CO2. However, since it there is in fact a change in the gas storage in the body during exercise, a more accurate equation has been developed called the Haldane transformation. Another thing that is determined from the comparison is that the energy expenditure for the given activity can be calculated in that one is able to determine the amount of kcal’s used which can then be multiplied by the amount of O2 consumed by the body per minute. The resting metabolic rate, RMR, is influenced by psychological stress, free-fat mass, body temperature, and body surface area. Body temperature influences RMR through increasing its rate as the temperature increases because since heat is energy the overall amount of energy is increased in order to maintain said temperature increase, which in turn increases RMR. Resting metabolic rate is influenced by psychological stress because since the amount of stress the body is under relates to the activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which RMR is a part of, then as the stress increases so does the body’s RMR. When one’s body surface area is higher, then more heat loss occurs from the skin which in turn causes the energy needed to keep body temperature regulated is increased, thereby raising the resting metabolic rate.
