Resisting Persuasion

In their research Psychologist, Zakary L. Tormala and Richard E. Petty write about the effects of resisting persuasion and our attitude certainty meaning a person’s judgment about his or her attitude. They concluded that when people resisted persuasion, they can become more certain of their initial attitude certainty. Several of the experiments demonstrated that when participants resisted persuasion, attitude certainty increased, but only when the attack was strong. When attacks were weak their certainty was unchanged or stayed the same. Fifty-six undergraduates from Ohio State University participated in the experiment for their introductory psychology course.     Audiences with low ego-involvement typically do not possess strong attitudes towards a subject, positively or negatively. If presented properly via peripheral persuasion cues (e.g. credibility, visual stimulation, etc.), arguments either for or against a topic can be effective persuasion. However, any attitude change is not long-lasting and can be reversed with an equally believable argument in favor of the opposing side.
