In the poem, there is a father and son and it shows that the father kind of becomes rough with him due to the fact he has been drinking. The speaker (the son) is reflecting on the events that happen on the evening before his father put him to bed. His bonding time with his father before bed and how they would interact in a way that may seem rough but loving at the same time. And due to his father drinking, he can't seem to control his actions and seems to be uncoordinated. Because in lines four and five it says "we romped until the pans slid from the kitchen shelf" , showing that he may have knocked over things in the there due to him drinking and not have proper coordination or balance.…

Arnold and his mother, although physically present in each other’s lives, are emotionally distant to the point where neither one can communicate their feelings to the other. Arnold would be outside doing chores or playing while his mother stayed inside to take care of household chores. He desperately wanted to to feel some sort of connection with his mother. “Arnold would deliberately come out from the shade where he was playing and make himself as uncomfortable as his mother was in the kitchen by standing in the sun until the sweat ran down his body.”…

The simple, straightforward title of the poem “Mother to Son,” by the African-American poet Langston Hughes (1902-1967), finds both the speaker of the work and the person to whom her words are discussed. The very first line of the poem is typical of the rest of the work in its use of phrasing that is colloquial—that is, in this case, phrasing that implies one person speaking to another. Yet the phrasing is also colloquial in the sense that it is ordinary, unpretentious, and informal. By beginning with the word “Well,” the mother sounds as if she is responding to a question from her son, while the use of the generic word “son” sounds (ironically) more affectionate than if she had used the son’s proper name. By using the word “son,” the mother also makes their relationship seem universal and archetypal—as if this might be any mother speaking to any son.…
