Much has happened since I started college, and resilience has blossomed into something that has kept me afloat through some of my toughest semesters. Resilience is my strongest trait as a student and learner, without it I would not be here at this point in my life, within months of transferring to a four-year university or a 3.5 GPA student. Being a verbal-linguistic learner, some classes are tougher than others, due to differing teaching styles. Verbal-linguistic learners are those that learn and understand material best when it is in written or spoken format, such as lectures and discussions. There is an exception, though. Tentative Hypothesis: Birdie McGreavy Throughout the article Resilience as Discourse, author Bridie McGreavy (2016) characterized the existing understanding of resilience, as well as took a turn in the conversation and constructed new avenues of thought. Across McGreavy’s (2016) introduction she skillfully introduced the current state of knowledge regarding resilience by means of verbs such as “positioned”, in an aim of noting the bereft existence of comprehension. McGreavy’s (2016) identification of questions unanswered by the existing understanding of the subject allowed her to then create space and extend the conversation, through statements such as “to address these questions, I investigated”.…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination. While these academic complications seemed unbearable at the time, my senior year turned out to be my most challenging year.…

Mental health and resilience are paramount factors in overcoming obstacles and adversity. While it is often thought that resilience is merely one’s ability to overcome adversity, resilience is composed of several individual components that determine whether a person will conquer the obstacles that arise in life, and to what extent these obstacles will impact the person. In this essay, I will examine my strengths and weaknesses in these areas of mental health and resilience and apply them to a difficult challenge that I have faced in my own life.
