Resilience: My Life After My Mother's Divorce

I believe that I have shown resilience my whole life, especially after my parents’ divorce. My mom was battling alcoholism, and it became my responsibility to take care of my family. Without dad around, I had to start cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and taking care of my siblings. Things were extremely difficult at home, and we were assigned a social worker, Stephanie. Steph was very good at making sure we had what we needed. She was especially a good listener and helped me personally get through this time. In the midst of or shortly after the divorce, my mom lost her job at a company in which she was heavily invested. She slightly cleaned up her act and went back to school. She received her associates degree in accounting and got a job. Since then my relationship with my mom has been improving. Steph has left her job with social services, but she is still very involved in my life. Despite my obstacles, I have set high academic goals for myself earning a place on the H-D Honor Roll for the past 6 years. I had the opportunity to attend some classes at Iowa State with a friend. Sitting in his Econ class, I realized this is the place I wanted to pursue my dreams. I believe that I can prosper as a student and as a person. l believe my determination to succeed, organizational skills, and passion for agriculture will make me a successful student and future graduate of Iowa State. I have proven that I can perform at a college level, even as a senior in high school. I will graduate in May 2016 with 24 college
