Resident Advisor Selection Essay

Dear Resident Advisor Selection Committee,I have been interested in becoming an RA since I started at Cal Poly earlier this academic year. My interest further increased when I met my current RA, Victoria Duncan. She has always been friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. She made me feel comfortable in the dorm room experience right from the beginning. I knew that I wanted to be that friendly, welcoming face to the future students of Cal Poly. My experience as a leader and role model combined with my authentic personality, ability to multitask, and ability to effectively work in groups will make me a fantastic Resident Advisor. The two summers that I spent at Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp (MHKC) taught me so much about myself, about working with others, …show more content…
During camp, learning to adapt to balancing all elements of camp life is essential to the success of the group. Working in groups is also an essential part of the job. On the last night of camp, one female camper who was completely deaf became emotional that she would have to return home the following morning. The graduate student counselor was at a total loss for what to do and how to calm her down. I sat with them both for about an hour, helping them communicate, both of us reassuring her, until she finally calmed down enough to fall to sleep. While the situations in the RA position may not be precisely of this nature, this example shows that I can think on my feet and collaborate with others to solve an issue that may arise and require immediate attention. I am confident that I can be sensitive to the needs of my residents, work alongside my fellow RA’s, and trouble-shoot any issues that arise, no matter the time or severity of the issue. Resident Advisors are the on the ground leaders and voices for the students of Cal Poly. They are the first people new students encounter, and they are the people the students continually go to for any questions and concerns they may

For the past four years I have had the pleasure of working for a Non-Profit Organization named Seven Hills Foundation. It was created in 1951, by a small group of parents of disabled children, sharing the same vision. That vision was to advocate and improve the lives of their children while providing support to each other when needed. Since that time, Seven Hills foundation has flourished into one of the largest support networks for individuals with life challenges. Seven Hills Foundation has an organizational culture that appeals to many people.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

My interest in being a resident advisor (“RA”) stems from my desire to work intimately, candidly, and meaningfully with other people. My most rewarding relationships have all been built upon some mutually meaningful connection, whether it arises from experiencing grueling football practices together, sharing a common set of interests with someone, or working with others to finish a challenging project. I see the RA position as a way to maximize my likelihood of making these meaningful connections with other individuals, those individuals, in this case, being my future residents and fellow RAs. However, I am not applying to this position for the sole purpose of making friends, and I appreciate that the role of the RA is not always that of a friend. Even so, enhancing the lives of other individuals, with or without a corresponding friendship, is sufficiently fulfilling in and of itself.…

Healthcare overall has been one of my passions for as long as I can remember. I started out as a teenager in high school taking care of my grandmother on my father 's side. Soon after I had taken on many other clients, juggling long hours day to day, all the while trying to keep up my grades in school. A couple of years went by and I began to do PCW work for my mother 's parents. At that time I knew that I wanted to stay in the healthcare field for my profession, and I finally decided to further my education here at Kaplan University.…

Resident Assistants are one of the first friendly faces students meet when they move in on campus. They are welcoming and kind human beings who are ready to help their residences, or any members of the Suffolk community, at any point of time. Personally, I aspire to become a Resident Assistant for multiple reasons. The first being that I thoroughly enjoy being friendly and kind. Being nice to people is a characteristic that is just instilled within me, which I believe is a good quality to possess while obtaining this position.…

As mentioned before, counselors must be active and present personality-wise both in and out of the cabin. Being a counselor requires constant attention to a series of moving parts; keeping campers happy and safe, being aware of another camper’s problems (as well as arguments between campers), and keeping their activity, whether in or out of camp, interesting and productive. All of these tasks must be met, on top of the other jobs counselors must perform, such as being “OD” at night or thinking of clever, attention grabbing announcements for activities (which isn’t limited to singing a tennis related spoof of Frozen’s “Let it Go” in the dining hall, or thinking of clever skits to sell the Sunday Activity). Being a counselor is the ultimate form of multitasking. Though not impossible, it certainly can be considered the most challenging aspect of the…

I have realized recently that this has probably been one of the craziest, most challenging, yet most rewarding summers of my life. I would never have imagined to the extent that this job would change my viewpoint, myself, and reorient my dreams. Since the first day I walked into Campion, I felt an overwhelming sense of home, family, kinship, love. When I had signed up for this job, I thought it would be similar to my other job of tutoring kids on the weekdays. However, I was not prepared to have gone through various emotional turmoil, chaotic field trips, late night bonding with the students, and more.…

My overall experience at the Seabeck Deafblind Camp was absolutely fantastic. There was so much that I learned in my work and training during that week, and I left with a sense of confidence and a lot of epiphanies in working as an intervenor for people who are Deafblind. The first day consisted of training by the Deafblind camp leaders on how to use pro-tactile with Deafblind people. The leaders emphasized the importance of touch with a deafblind person and never leaving them isolated – having a connection as well as respect for the Deafblind persons.…
