Resident Advisor Research Paper

My interest in being a resident advisor (“RA”) stems from my desire to work intimately, candidly, and meaningfully with other people. However, I am not applying to this position for the sole purpose of making friends, and I appreciate that the role of the RA is not always that of a friend. Even so, enhancing the lives of other individuals, with or without a corresponding friendship, is sufficiently fulfilling in and of itself. While I recognize that this does not make me particularly unique, I feel it is important to say that I derive great enjoyment from making the lives of others better. Indeed, there are few other ways to directly improve the lives of my fellow Cornellians than by taking a job wherein my responsibility is to do so. Thus, the RA position’s …show more content…
In a conversation with my current RA (Brittany), I learned that RAs are trained to handle delicate topics, like mental health and coping with LGBT+ identification. Professional authors have battled with writer's block since the start of literature itself, famous authors such as Mark Twain even “offered advice” for writers to overcome writer's block: ““The secret of getting ahead is getting started. I anticipate my lifestyle changing a small bit, if I was to become a Residential Assistant. Although the position of being an RA comes before any other commitments, I feel that it will still be possible to balance my social life and continually see my friends. The only main change I foresee is that I will have to watch how I act and what I say. I need to set an example and be a role model. People cannot do that if they act irresponsibly and negatively with their friends or residents.…

This position caught my eye as soon as I stepped foot on campus, my parents and I were introduced to Ms. Marsha Dawson at a mixer and through her I gained an awareness of the possibilities of becoming an RA.
