Resident Advisor Position Report

Decent Essays
I have been interested in the Resident Advisor Position since I was in High School. My sister is an RA at Boston College, and she frequently raved about how much she enjoyed the position. Since she and I are extremely close, I often helped her create her door decorations, plan events, and listened to many stories about her experience. I came to Hamilton knowing that I wanted to be an RA, and I cannot imagine my time at Hamilton without having that experience. The main aspect of the RA position that I find extremely attractive (besides the fact that I get to make door decorations!), is that this job allows creativity and social interaction to intertwine in a very unique way. Especially as a RA for Freshman, the creativity of the events you plan

Diversity is being surrounded by people of different backgrounds and learning from their unique experiences and connecting with them. As a Resident Advisor I will develop a diverse and inclusive floor by promoting awareness of the vast number of different cultures and backgrounds present not only on the floor but in the building as well. I would also make it a point to ensure that every voice on the floor carries the same weight; even if their voice and opinion is in the minority, I want them to know that not being in the majority does not means that they are wrong. Furthermore, I want to bring in a speaker from the Multicultural Centre to discuss the social customs of a culture that is underrepresented. I would also take them to guest speakers…

During this week’s assignment I found the interview of Dr. Allen Frances was very interesting. Being in the Human Services program here at SCC and wanting to become a social worker I have been told that I need to be familiar with the DSM-5. I definitely agree with him that normality is difficult to define and it has become a cultural concept rather than a medical concept. Dr. Allen Frances states that our society is already immersed in pill popping which I didn’t find surprising at all. My opinion and viewpoint towards this is I feel like sometimes people get diagnosed incorrectly but any easy solution to make someone feel better is by taking medications and switching them up if some aren’t working.…

I remember when I first moved into the dorms, I felt completely lost. I didn’t know where my classes were, I didn’t know where to get toilet paper, and I didn’t know where to put our trash. My RA’s goal was to help put all of these at ease and to make my transition a little easier. I noticed that some activities that I thought would be a success weren’t and that activities that would not be successful actually were. For example, the trivia activity, which I throughout was going to not going successful since we didn’t plan on it, was the most successful. The reason I think it was successful was because many people liked candy canes and they were willing to do some trivia to get one. The trivia consisted of Christmas movie lines and Christmas songs. I loved how the audiences would engage with us, and talk about their lives and interacting in the activities.…
