Residency Reflection

This residency experience was exceptional and overall a life changing experience. It provided needed motivation to move forward in my schooling with larger strides and helped me refocus my goals and aspirations. Receiving constructive feedback from Dr. Carter and my classmates was amazing and helped me highlight the areas that I am doing well as well as the areas that I need improvement.

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

With a mission devoted to providing an unparalleled medical education, focused upon the improvement of community health, service to underserved populations, and promotion of diversity, I believe Morehouse School of Medicine can provide me with a rich medical experience that will lend itself well to my development as a medical student and aspiring physician. An emphasis on serving underserved groups, such as minorities, and addressing current health disparities were my primary motivations for applying to Morehouse School of Medicine. Following residency, I hope to practice medicine in a community limited in terms of affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare options. In such a community, I can utilize my medical education for the purpose of addressing the health concerns and disparities affecting those in society who are often ignored and suffer in health as a result.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

During my Freshman year of high school, I began to realize that the medical field was my calling. I was not sure what area of study I wanted to pursue a career in, but I knew that I had an affinity for the sciences and the medical field. It wasn't until two years later, my Junior year, that radiography became the area of the medical field that I knew I wanted to concentrate on. I have been a cheerleader since third grade.…

The experience gave me the opportunity to work in a clinic and observe what the day-to-day professional life of a doctor entails. I learned about the work involved before seeing a patient including checking for insurance eligibility and prescription use. I learned how to check patient 's vital signs and how to take notes during a medical appointment and upload those notes into patients ' health records. I was able to form strong bonds with the patients over the course of my internship which I particularly enjoyed. The clinic felt like a close community with all the interns, staff and Dr. Liu working closely together in order to provide care for the patients and getting to know them in the process.…
