Why are you applying to be a Residence Advisor? (150 words or less)

One major reason I want to be a Residence Advisor is so I can help out and guide other students. In the first week of school, I felt completely isolated at my residence. However, my floor’s Residence Advisor caught on and made me feel welcomed, invited and encouraged me to attend events. To this day, she supports me in my studies, personal problems and in my health. I want to be there for others like she was for me. I want to help others, make them feel like they belong and ensure their transition into university is smooth. In addition, I want to be a part of a community like the other residence advisors have. I watch them everyday interact, help each other and organize events.

In combination to my office duties, a major part of my job was helping out teachers with their students. I helped students out with their reading and writing, home-sickness problems, and their problems with their peers. With the language barrier, there was a new problem everyday. In one situation, there was a boy who was home-sick and refused to even enter his classroom. With the other assistants, we all worked together to make the boy feel welcome at the school. I even ended up learning phrases in Japanese as he knew almost no English. In a different instance, I worked one-on-one with a girl who refused to complete her school work. She eventually opened up to me about her family problems. I worked with her every day till she felt comfortable at school. Through this position, I learned how to work as a team, how to communicate with various people of all ages, how to properly resolve problems, and how to create unity. All these skills will help me accelerate and be a dependable Residence Advisor.

One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. Working at the Community Training Residence (CTR), a half way house, I have identified that offenders face difficulties obtaining employment following their release. CTR attempts to reintegrate offenders into the community by addressing criminogenic needs, relaying them to employment resources as well as giving guidance to a structured lifestyle while slowly allowing community contact. Possible factors of high unemployment rates offenders face are lack of skills or experience, no employment prior to incarceration, or loss of employment due to conviction. When offenders apply to CTR, a decision panel meets with the offender at the correctional to form a case plan on what the offender plans to do once at the house, one being to actively seek…
