I helped students out with their reading and writing, home-sickness problems, and their problems with their peers. With the language barrier, there was a new problem everyday. In one situation, there was a boy who was home-sick and refused to even enter his classroom. With the other assistants, we all worked together to make the boy feel welcome at the school. I even ended up learning phrases in Japanese as he knew almost no English. In a different instance, I worked one-on-one with a girl who refused to complete her school work. She eventually opened up to me about her family problems. I worked with her every day till she felt comfortable at school. Through this position, I learned how to work as a team, how to communicate with various people of all ages, how to properly resolve problems, and how to create unity. All these skills will help me accelerate and be a dependable Residence Advisor.
