What inspires someone to continue what they have started? When all hope is lost and your desire to continue is weakening, what will keep you from giving up and to stop trying? It is something that in some is prevalent, but others not so much. And that is determination. In the novel Unbroken written by Laura Hillenbrand, there is a tremendous amount of perseverance and determination exhibited. All characters in this novel experience some type of determination. Where there is pain there is normally determination, having guidance from others encourages stronger determination, and people who showcase determination will generally succeed. Without strong determination and perseverance it is unlikely one will succeed. Where there is pain there …show more content…

For someone to motivate and strengthen them to keep going will normally prove to be truthful. An approach to this would be in the epic poem The Odyssey Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, deals with tremendous hardship from suitors who have intruded her home and waiting for 20 long years for her husband to return home to Ithaca. Penelope stayed strong through the help of her son, Telemachus, who kept her going for his survival and Telemachus himself kept her spirits up and determined to keep her faith to Odysseus. Having the help of Telemachus encouraged her to not give up but to stay strong for Telemachus and her husband. Another example of how others’ guidance encourages stronger motivation is in the well-written novel The Alchemist. The main character, Santiago, already has truly outstanding perseverance. But, his mentor in a sense, the Alchemist kept him even more determined. He guided him through all his movements in the desert and kept him strong on his journey to achieving his personal legend. Without the help of the Alchemist, Santiago would have not had the will to keep going, but instead he would have stayed in the small-town village with his new-love, Fatima. One last idea is in the bestseller Unbroken. Many wondered how did Louie stay so determined? How did he not give up? What kept him going? Home. Louie kept his determination by having thoughts of home

Louis Zamperini had the incredible drive and resilience to never give up no matter what he faced. He endured through giving up his Olympic dreams to be a part of the military where his life would never be the same again. He experienced and suffered through a plane crash, lack of food and water, predator attacks, and most of all, Japanese imprisonment (Hillenbrand 125, 162, 197). At these camps, he was tortured, beaten, verbally afflicted, and starved worse than anything a person could ever dream of (Hillenbrand 300). The story of Louis Zamperini in Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken tells the struggle of the Olympic athlete from being lost at sea for almost two months to being a prisoner of war in multiple camps of Japan. The pain that Louie experienced was not all physical. The veteran’s exposure to mental abuse matched equally (possibly even more) to the amounts of beatings he got on a daily basis. After the war Louis suffered from PTSD which eventually lead him into alcoholism. Even though alcoholism is a serious disease, Louis Zamperini quotes that there is one thing worse than alcoholism, hatred.…

Knowing when something is wrong, is different than, accepting when something is wrong, and that is exactly what was happening in "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. Awareness as said in "What is Resilience" by Kendra Cherry is "when resilient people are aware of the situation, their own emotional reactions and the behavior of those around them", and being aware that they are in trouble is very difficult for Mac, and Phil, because they do not want to accept that they are in need of help. Louie is aware that he has to do everything in his power to help Mac…

Being persistent is a great quality to have and aim for because it means that you do not quit easily no matter how difficult the circumstances that may come your way are. Gladwell even implies that persistence is automatically good throughout chapter 8 of “Outliers” by using the rice farmers in China as an example; however, there are situations when persistence causes problems. When a person is too persistent, it comes off as annoying. For instance, when a man is courting a girl and she turns him down or gives hint that she does not see him the way he sees her, it is irritating on the girl’s part; however no one is to blame for this because we cannot alter our emotions in an instant even if we wanted to; it takes time. We shouldn’t be apologetic…
