The reservation elects normally two members to be their chiefs. These two members have been male and serve as a form of contact between the reservation and the outside world. These chiefs deal with day-to-day violations inside the reservation and make decisions based on democratic vote. At any time, the members of the reservation can elect new chiefs if the current ones are not doing what they like (Lee 1999 p. 94). These reservation ache work much like a city. The chiefs are like the mayor, and carry out the wishes of the people. The chiefs know that if they don’t do what the census like then someone will replace them that will. Just like a mayor, a chief is the voice of the people. In the case of the Ache, they are a representation of the entire Ache in whatever area they are located now. The Ache believe in “Berendy”, this supernatural power has a human form and a astronomical form, being that of a meteor or shooting star. Berendy is frightening to the Ache and is believed to be the cause for fire and darkness. Other bands of the Ache believed in a supernatural power that was related to shadows and the wind.
