Body Mass Index: A Case Study Of A Sixty-Eight Year Old Female

In this paper, a case study of a sixty-eight year old female, who is independent and has no restrictions of mobility will be explored. The paper will identify her body mass index and discuss screening tools that maybe used to help identify potential issues with nutrition and exercise. Potential outcomes and interventions will be discussed to help promote healthier aging as well as potential barriers to meet these outcomes.
Body Mass Index Body mass index is used to help measure a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. This measurement is only an estimate and does not take into consideration a person’s muscle and bone mass (Mayo Clinic, 2016). In this case study our female weighs 210 pounds and is five feet and six inches tall. Her estimated body mass index would be 33.9, placing her in the obese category. A normal BMI would range from 18.5 to 24.9, one is considered overweight with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 and a BMI over 30 is considered as obese (Mayo Clinic, 2016).

Intervention 1. Walking for 30 minutes at least 4-5 times each week.
Intervention 2. Will join a local fitness center or attend exercise classes at the local senior citizen center.
Intervention 3. Increase daily activity by making changes in behaviors such as taking stairs instead of elevator, parking away from buildings to encourage walking and performing yard and house work. Rationale. With the ageing process muscle mass is lost and this is known as sarcopenia or age related muscle wasting. This contributes to the loss of strength and can cause issues with mobility and disabilities in older adults.
