The first step in becoming a cosmetologist is finding a cosmetology or beauty school that fits your

needs. At cosmetology schools, students learn the skills and techniques needed to pass their state

licensing exam for hair, nails, makeup, safety and training cosmetology school training includes a

combination of in-class lectures, textbook learning and practical, hands-on training in a salon setting. On

average, comprehensive cosmetology programs last between 1,400 to 1,600 hours. Because

cosmetology program curriculum, cost, hours and licensing requirements vary by state, the best way to

Cosmetologists are required to complete training at a certified cosmetology school to get licensed. Most

procedures and business management. Most cosmetology programs also provide basic training in

makeup application, manicures, and massage therapy and skincare treatments. Cosmetology programs
