Impact on Students
Pfeiffer (2011) made a valid point by stating that students with special education needs seem to adapt better to year round school because it sets a daily routine for the students. He also stated that students with learning disabilities attending year round school will have less skill regression. McMullen and Rouse () shared that students that are from low-income families are often less likely to be able to afford learning materials for the summer months of vacation if they attend a traditional school. They also shared that student achievement may decline over summer break of low achieving and disadvantaged students.
Continuing on, let’s look at how year round school students compare to those at a traditional school section III will look at the research that has been found and how it was conducted. Section IV will take a look at the data from four different states including California, Illinois, Texas and North Dakota. Section V will take a look at what can be done to help the struggling school.

Many studies in the past have looked at year round schools overall and concluded that they are not beneficial. This literature review was to help look at what subgroups do benefit from year rounds schools because we all know that traditional schools are not appropriate for all students. There are minor issues that need to be addressed and some major ideas that would have to happen before a traditional school could switch to year round school.
First all schools would have to have proper air conditioning and heating in the schools. You cannot have school in a building that does not have proper heating and cooling. Next staff members would have to be trained how a year round school works because it would be a shift from someone who has only taught or attended traditional school.
With regard to academic’s teachers and administrators would want to look at what states are doing well in which subgroup in order to monitor what they do and receive feedback from them. For example, California’s limited English proficient students had a huge gain at year round schools with 145% improvement. Schools looking to change to year round schools could benefit from meeting with those teachers and coming up with a list of strategies that work well for them. Illinois did well with students who are economically disadvantaged in the area of math so again have a group
