Reflective Essay: The Use Of Humor Styles Questionnaire

Sense of humor is defined as the ability to perceive humor or appreciate a joke, in contrast styles of humor are defined as the style in which one chooses to tell a joke. Humor is a concept with various dimensions, which can portray different types of psychological traits. The Humor Styles Questionnaire is a self-report measure that assesses four dimensions relating to individual differences in uses of humor. These are: affiliate, self enhancing, aggressive, and self defeating humor. The humor styles questionnaire is a precise example of using a Likert scale questionnaire, which contains a series of statements, inviting the user to respond to each based on how strongly they feel on a sliding scale. The use of humor can be directly related to healthy psychological behavior such as coping with stress, emotional temperament and an attitude. I personally, believe humor is an essential part of life, which is was why I chose to peruse The Humor Styles Questionnaire. In contrast, high neuroticism was correlated with the decreased use of self enhancing humor, which led to a lower satisfaction with life. As I previously stated my test subject, had been sleep deprived and not feeling excitable nor social. She was experiencing low levels of extraversion which is why she scored low in self-enhancing humor. In contrast, she was experiencing a period of high neuroticism which is directly correlated to low levels of life satisfaction and the use of self-enhancing and affiliative humor. Individuals high on neuroticism are deprived of the benefits of affiliative humor which facilitates social relationships.
