Found in lakes, ponds and any area that well have any rocky substance or logs. Rusty Crayfish, is an invader that has invaded lakes in the northern reagan. There robust claws that most members of the Orconectes genius don't have makes then an unique but dangerous species . It was first indentificaded as “Rusty ” in Belgrade, great pond in the late 1968. It curentaly was founded in Michigan, Massachusetts, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico and parts in New england expect wisconsin, canada and Ontario.…
The invasive effects of Dreissena polymorpha on native mussels within the Great Lakes region The Great Lakes area once supported an abundant number of freshwater mussels (Mollusca: Unionacea). The invasion of Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) has decimated these populations, by outcompeting native mussels in dispersal rates, and reproduction, due to enhanced survival mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms that have allowed Zebra mussels to out complete native fresh water mussels, will provide insight into possible mechanisms that can stop the spread of Zebra mussels, and help with the survival of native mussels. Griffiths et al. conducted length-frequency analysis of the Zebra mussel population, before 1988 (prediscovery) and between…
Crayfish can be found in Australia and many other parts of the world but most commonly in North America, specially U.S.A. Due to the EPA foundation, they are not extinct. EPA has used liming in many lakes in order to save many aquatic animals. If EPA didn’t exist, many aquatic animals would be classified as extinct, as they cannot survive in a toxic environment. In 30 years, we believe crayfish are not going to be classified as extinct, as there are many programs trying to solve the problem, and some of their solutions have already worked. For instance, the lake in New England.…
Silent but deadly. It might be too late to save the aquatic animals in the Great Lakes from migrant species that have come to take over, and make a new home. Shipping vessels coming from other waters carry many unwanted guests, known as invasive species, to make home in our waters in the United States. Invasive species hiding in the ballast of ships entering the Great Lakes damage the Great Lakes’ ecosystem.…
Killer whales, also known as orcas, are the largest members of the dolphin family and the top predator in their ecosystem. They are one of the most intelligent marine creatures, especially due to their acute senses of sight and hearing. This mammal has an added part of the brain that allows the orcas to communicate between orcas. This language allows them to be social between other whales and also social with human beings. Their beauty has astounded humans for generations, but for many orcas captivity limits their freedom and their quality of life.…
Zebra mussels are a small bivalve mollusk that originate from Eastern Europe and Western Asia (kdheks.gov). Zebra Mussels get their name because, of their cream and black stripes on their shells. Zebra mussels have small dime sized, triangle shaped shells. Zebra Mussels in large numbers are known as colonies and can contain millions of individual mussels. They’re known as an exotic invasive species because they are nonnative to US waters.…
Lionfish is type of marine fish. Lionfish is not endangered species that we should be concerned about. There are about 10 types of different species of lionfish. This invasive species can be found across the eastern coast of the United States. Lionfish prefer to live near coral reefs and in rock crevices.…
Zebrafish embryos are suitable to use as a model system to perform chemical biology experiments effectively in educational sites. In this experiment, we studied the effect of caffeine on heartbeat rate and other phenotypes of zebrafish embryos using visual microscopy and simple imaging. A small drop for concentrations of caffeine in embryo medium caused an amount-dependent decrease in heartbeat rate in 2-3-day-old zebrafish embryos, finally resulting in complete heartbeat stop. We observed the decrease pattern in heartbeat rate for an initial acute drop in heartbeat and a period of stabilization followed as 15 seconds and 60 seconds by complete cessation. The causes known to be antagonistic to caffeine when the effects of caffeine were not…
Within the past several decades, the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha has made its way to the top of the list as one of the most destructive invasive species in the North American water systems. While many studies have been made focusing on the ecological impact of zebra mussels, little is known about the geographical history of their invasions and patterns of genetic differentiation among and within populations in their native and invaded ranges (May, Gelembiuk, Panov, Orlova, & Lee, 2006). From what is known, zebra mussels were first described by German zoologist Peter Simon Pallas in 1769 and originally endemic to the northern and southern regions of the Ponto-Caspian Sea in Eastern Europe (Johnson & Carlton, 1996). As globalization took place, the construction of…
Across species such as from insects to mammals, TLR pathways vary from fish in comparison to mammals. In the skin of Zebrafish, a high percentage of TLRs are present because of the intense role of fighting off pathogens needed. In the Zebrafish alone, there are 20 variations of TLRs where 10 can be shared with humans but the TLR22 is specific to fish. TLR21 are found in birds, amphibians and fish. TLR6 and TLR10 are not found in fish but TLR14 and TLR18 are not from mammals.…
Zebra mussels An invasive species is any sort of fungus, animal, or insect that is introduced into the ecosystem of another country they are not native to. The zebra mussel has a pattern similar to a zebra. Zebra mussels are the size of a thumbnail. The zebra mussel has clean the water because they can filter up to one liter of water per mussel. Zebra mussels strain the water for food they eat in order to survive.…
The zebrafish is an important bio-model organism which came in existence in great part due to the spearheading work laid by scientists between the late 1960s and mid-1990s. In 1981, George Streisinger, established the first zebrafish models and performed the pioneering works on its genetics and developmental biology. Charles Kimmel gave descriptions of the cellular fate map and the stages of development in embryos; and Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard was the one…
There are all types of bass, largemouth, smallmouth, striped, Japanese sea bass, European sea bass, white bass, and black sea bass. Of the different types of bass the freshwater largemouth bass is by far the most exciting fish to catch. The Largemouth bass is a freshwater game fish in the sunfish family, a species of black bass native to North America. The scientific name is micropterus salmoides. Full grown, a largemouth bass averages fifteen pounds.…
SeaWorld. We have all heard the name, considering they were once one of the most successful amusement parks in the world. Everyone wanted to come see Shamu, the huge majestic killer whale, do tricks so close to us we could get soaked. The whales always seemed to be in sync with the performers; we thought nothing could top getting splashed by gallons of water by a humongous whale. Unfortunately, in recent years, the saying “all press is good press” has not seemed to apply to SeaWorld.…
Fish. My parents love all types of fish. Some dishes my parents love for example are: fried fish, smoked salmon, butterfly cut fish, fish and chips, beer battered fish, and grilled fish. Everyone I am close to loves fish. My big sis loves fish, my grandma loves fish, my little sister loves fish, and my cousins love fish, but I absolutely HATE FISH.…
