The tale “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays the growth of the protagonist through lucid metaphorical setting. It takes the form of an allegory in which a man struggles between good and evil to an extent that his religious faith ultimately falls into the trap of evilness. Although, the “Goodman” in Brown’s name suggests that he is a pious being, he desires to explore the darkness within himself which leads him to journey the evil forest. Hawthorne leaves an unanswered question towards the end of the story of whether the journey of Brown into the woods was certain or just a dream. However, this does not matter prominently as Goodman Brown is forever changed regardless of the journey being a dream or a reality.
