The Wright Brothers

Wilbur and Orville Wright, also known as “The Wright Brothers,” are most famous for successfully researching and testing the first engine powered and controlled aircraft. In approximately 1899, The Wright Brothers became interested in aviation after discovering flight theories that had not yet been pursued. They used a system to analyze their results from previous tests and improve their machine, which is still being used today for progress in new technology. The Wright Brothers had an impact on the world by constructing an idea of what the future of aerospace would become.
Wilbur Wright was born in Millville, Indiana on April 16, 1867, to Susan and Milton Wright. He was the third born to a family of five. Milton's preaching job was constantly moving Wilbur and his siblings around the country until Milton was elected editor of his church's newspaper, Religious Telescope, moving the family to Dayton, Ohio. After renting and buying different houses, the family finally settled in a house in West Dayton where Susan gave birth to her fourth child, Orville, on August 19, 1871. Their father encouraged them from a young age to actively think and expand their interests. In 1878, Milton bought a French rubber band powered toy helicopter for the boys. In 1888, Orville had the idea to design and build a printing press which was used to publish a daily newspaper. Orville’s eagerness to accomplish this project brought Wilbur to continue his interest in technology. A new bicycle craze began in 1892 when the ‘safety bicycle’ was introduced to America from England. The bike had two wheels of the same size which made it easier to ride. The Wright Brothers formed the Wright Cycle Company and repair shop in response to the new mania. They became more experienced and knowledgeable in mechanics.
