Women’s rights are rights that promote a position of legal and social equality of women with men. Some of the main people involved in the women’s rights movement were Betty Friedman, Gloria Steinem, and the judges in the Supreme Court in 1973. Betty Friedan published the book Feminine Mystique that attacked the popular notion that women during this time could only find fulfillment through childbearing and homemaking. The book described the problems of middle-class American women and the fact that women were being denied equality with men. It said that women were kept from reaching their full capacities. The impact of the book Feminine mystique was that it ignited the contemporary women's movement.

Wade ruling on abortion. The verdict was that abortion was legal, but just barely with a 5 to 4 ratio. The cause of this case was that women believe they have a right to privacy concerning their bodies, and thus abortion should be a legal activity. Two of the seven judges were very disapproving of the verdict believing that it was their responsibility to protect the potential of lives conceived through a fetus. The result of this ruling legalized abortion; Court justices ruled that governments lacked the power to ban abortions, due to the decision protected by the 14th Amendment. During the first trimester of pregnancy it allows American women to have the absolute right to an abortion in the first 3 months of pregnancy. During the second it allows some government regulation in the second trimester of pregnancy. Lastly, in the third it declares that states may restrict or ban abortions as the fetus nears the point where it could live outside the womb; a woman can obtain an abortion if doctors certify it is necessary to save her life or health. Opinions on abortion deeply divided American society and politics. The Democrats were in the Pro-choice position of abortion, as they are more liberal and less religious, and it appeals to women in liberal parts of the US, but the Republicans thought Abortion is 'Godless' as they are Conservative and
