What if you weren’t so tired in school? Imagine feeling energized and refreshed, ready to learn with your classmates all around you, happily talking about class and catching up with each other. School could be so much better. Therefore, the question is-- should schools have later starting times? Most students go to school early, come home longing for sleep, and stay up long hours into the night doing homework. However, this is detrimental to their health and performance. Many school boards assume that tired teenagers are just part of the high school experience. They do not see sleep deprived teenagers as being a big enough problem to change the school start times. On the other hand, many sleep experts recommend that schools begin later because teenagers require more sleep and naturally have a different sleep cycle. Many benefits occur because of later school start times. For this reason, school start times should be delayed.…

According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, “About 40 percent of U.S. public high schools open before 8 a.m., with just 15 percent starting 8:30 a.m. or later.” These statistics show that earlier school starting times are favored by many school systems. However, with that comes many problems for both students and teachers. Many students who come to school early are very tired, can not keep proper focus on their work, and end up with grades lower than they would be if their school start time was mushed up. For these reasons, and numerous more, I believe that schools start times should be later because of the countless benefits that could be obtained by students and teachers.…

Have you ever woke up one morning and felt exhausted from the moment you got up? Many students get this feeling every single day. They never feel energized and ready to go to school. This can leave students in a position where they either don't want to go to school or don't want to do anything when they arrive there. Students not getting enough sleep can be to blame for this. People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired. Therefore, grades and test results may increase. While it may use up a large sum of money to pay for transportation at different times, many students are able to get more sleep and better grades.…

If students start earlier then they get to leave earlier (classroom.synonym.com). This opinion is false because even if school will still begin at the same time as usual and kids will still be tired. Even if school did start earlier it would not be worth it for kids and teenagers because they need more sleep, which would mean they would need to go to bed earlier in the evening to get in a full eight hours. With sports, homework and other activities it is not possible for kids to go to bed early enough to get up in the morning. This would only be more harmful, even if it meant getting to leave school earlier. It is just too hard to concentrate after not getting enough sleep and getting up too early in the morning for kids and teenagers.…
