Research Paper On White Spruce

Improved Essays
The White Spruce, also known as the Picea alba, is a tree that is native to Michigan. In fact, this tree can be found on the Adrian College campus along with several other species of trees. The White Spruce is also one of eight different types of spruce trees found in North America. However, the White Spruce has multiple characteristics that make it unique, such as where it grows, its needles, and its pine cones. The White Spruce also has a different growing pattern than that of most trees. Tree farmers grow a vast amount of these trees because White Spruces are useful for pulpwood and sawtimber (Smith, 1952). These trees are most likely to be found in wetland conditions. For instance, they can be found along the sides of streams and shores.

If the name Headwaters Forest Preserve does not ring a bell, you might recall Julia Butterfly Hill, who spent 738 days between 12/10/1997 and 12/18/1999 in the tree affectionately known as "Luna," to prevent Pacific Lumber Company loggers from cutting it down. Pacific Lumber had been bought by Maxxam Corp., and they were clear cutting everything in sight to pay off the bonds they sold to buy this forest. Pacific Lumber, which had been doing sustainable logging for generations, suddenly became an environmental villain due to the hostile takeover. Senator Dianne Feinstein helped put together $380 million in state and federal money to purchase Headwaters, a pristine old growth redwood forest, within the Pacific Lumber lands, east of Eureka.…

Emerald Ash Borer in Wisconsin Veronica Williams, Andy Lundin, Balin Magee, Zach Smola Ash trees are a very common and beautiful tree in Wisconsin, and they are used by many people for their lumber. There is a nuisance attacking and destroying the ash tree, and that is the infestation of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer, or EAB. The adult beetles do little harm to the tree by just eating their foliage, but their larvae burrow beneath the bark of the tree and restrict the tree’s ability to transport nutrients and water. The process takes anywhere from 1-5 years and the infestation is usually widespread in an area.…

For me, a definition of a natural high is that it is something a person loves doing so much that in a way they get high. sassafras tree is the only tree mentioned that seems to not be present in Europe; Brereton describes this tree as “a tree of high price and profit.” This tree was likely the most profitable of all the above mentioned trees as it could be used for medicinal purposes, such as curing scurvy, and would likely have been useful in Europe and the New World. Fruits were also listed in some detail as they were encountered on the mainland and also on the Elizabeth Islands. Strawberries seemed to be the berry that was the most plentiful located on both the mainland and the islands. The strawberries are described as being both red and white as well as being larger than those found in England.…

It is mostly resistant to breakage. (Gilman-Watson, 1994) Despite the contradictory opinions about the species (foresters emphasise on how it prevents soil erosion and the soil shading ability, while ecologists how it suppresses the local flora, invasion capabilities and fire hazards), it's often used for land reclamation, as it has a wide tolerance range in temperature and soil quality as well. White pine (Pinus strobus) has an intermediate shade tolerance and can live well for many years under the canopy in partial sunlight. The young trees will respond quickly and positively when the suppressive layer is removed.…
