Week without walls"
Two years ago, no one would have imagined the transformation in my personality; from a timid and introvert teenager to an active young man striving to contribute to my community. My story started in tenth grade, when the school counselor recommended that I participate in the schools extended volunteer program under the "week without walls" initiative. The program, in hour school, was originally designed to provide the students with an opportunity to engage in experiential learning and participate in activity based programs. However, later on it evolved into an opportunity for willing students to focus on volunteer work.

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Audrey Hepburn once said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” I have been very fortunate to discover the incredible rewards of volunteering at a young age, and through engaging in the true gift of service I have committed myself to making a difference in my community through voluntarism. I have learned countless valuable skills through volunteering that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. One of the most amazing places to volunteer is the Little Light House. The Little Light House is tuition free Christian development center that provides educational and therapeutic services to children with special needs.…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

I was fourteen when I first discovered what it meant to be a volunteer; and I utterly despised it. Waking up bright and early Saturday morning to work without pay or compensation was such a bizarre idea to me because I did not understand why volunteers were always so cheerful and happy at early morning hours, when I in contrast, would have much rather been in the comfort of my bed fast asleep. But it did not take me long to succumb to the contagious chipper attitude -I was soon transformed into one of them. One of the people who look forward to community events like Parent’s Place Informational Fair, in which I could help people find the information they need to provide better care for their special needs child, or going down to the county…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…
