One instance where he demonstrated this was when Vlad III killed the Turks in order to protect the citizens of Romania. In the 1400s, the region of Wallachia was under constant threat from its neighbors, the Turks. Vlad III didn’t like the fact that he was losing. In order to win, he sent an army to push the Turks out of his land (Linke). Vlad the Impaler destroyed the Turkish army. The citizens in Wallachia considered Vlad the Impaler a hero. He not only saved his kingdom, but he also saved every person living in it. Turks came with another army, in hopes of defeating Vlad the Impaler. One story was recorded in which he demonstrated his methods. The story goes like this, a merchant came into his kingdom and reported that 160 pieces of gold were stolen from his cart. Vlad ordered that the merchant report back to him after the problem was solves. Vlad then announced to the citizens of his kingdom that the person who stole the gold would be brutally murdered if they didn’t bring back the gold in one day. The next day the gold was all brought back. The merchant counted the gold and realized that there was one extra gold piece. He reported to Vlad the Impaler the next day stating that all the gold pieces were returned to his cart, but there was one extra piece. Vlad the Impaler confessed his scheme. He had purposely placed that extra gold piece there. If the merchant didn’t notify him that there was an extra gold piece, he would have killed him with the man that stole his gold (Jamie). If you recall, Vlad said he would only kill the criminal if they didn’t bring back the gold, but he ended up killed the criminal anyway. This was his intention the whole time, he would never spare a criminals’ life just because they brought back the stolen
