Vitiligo is a condition in which a loss of cells that give color to the skin melanocytes results in smooth, white patches in the midst of normally pigmented skin. It is a common disorder that is caused by the loss of pigment in the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its color, so when you lose some pigment in the skin you will see a change of color in your skin. That's due to the destruction of pigment forming cells known as melanocytes. People with vitiligo seem to inherit a genetic predisposition for the disorder. The appearance of the disorder can be brought by a variety of precipitating causes. Many people say that their first vitiligo appeared following a traumatic or stressful event, such as a accident, losing a job and or losing a family member. …show more content…
People with vitiligo may also have pigment abnormalities of the retina or iris of the eyes. The diagnosis of vitiligo is usually made by observation. White areas found at typical sites point to a diagnosis of vitiligo. If the diagnosis isn't certain the doctors will test for other conditions that are similar to vitiligo, such as chemical leukoderma or systemic lupus erythematosus. For treatment vitiligo can't be cured, but can be managed by using things such as skin creams and cosmetics to improve the appearance of the white areas and also prevent the normal skin around the patches from becoming darker.
